Please note that today (Wednesday, October 4) at approximately 2:20 PM (Eastern Time) the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) are planning to conduct a nationwide test of both the Emergency Alert System (EAS) and Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA).

This national test will consist of two portions, testing WEA and EAS capabilities. These will only be tests of these systems and there will be no need for alarm.

The WEA test message will be sent to all consumer cell phones that are turned on and within range of an active cell tower. The test message will be displayed in either English or Spanish, depending on the language settings. All wireless phones should receive the message only once and they will clarify that the message is a test.

The EAS portion of the test will be broadcast on radios and televisions.
