Dear Schodack Families,
I am writing to let you know we are aware of the unspecified and generalized threats on social media – TikTok in particular – about violence in schools across the country tomorrow (Friday, December 17).
This social media threat did not originate locally but has been screen-captured and shared widely across the country. Our local BOCES (Questar III) referred it to law enforcement in Rensselaer, Columbia and Greene Counties and have discussed with authorities any next steps they may recommend. Additionally, I have been in contact with our local police department and they are aware of the situation.
While this threat is not localized and unsubstantiated, before tomorrow I ask you to remind your children about the importance of speaking to an adult if they know of:
-
any potential threats to our students, staff, or schools
-
any troubling behaviors displayed by their friends or classmates or
-
anything that does not seem right in general in school
All threats of violence, even those made in jest, are taken seriously by the district and may result in law enforcement becoming involved.
Should you receive any information about this that you believe requires immediate attention, please call 911 to report it.
If you have information that you believe we should be aware of, please contact your child’s building principal in their building’s main office or me in the district office as soon as possible. In the meantime, we will continue to keep you updated should we receive any further information.
