Schodack CSD Community,

I’m writing today to make you aware of an upcoming leadership change at Castleton Elementary School, well in advance. Our Castleton Elementary Principal, James Derby, will be stepping down from his position at the end of the school year for a new professional opportunity. On Wednesday evening, Mr. Derby was appointed as the next Principal of Red Mill Elementary School in the East Greenbush Central School District, effective July 1, 2026.

Mr. Derby has been an important part of the Schodack Central School District since joining us as the Middle School Principal in 2013, eventually moving into his current role as the Castleton Elementary Principal in 2016. During that time, Mr. Derby has had an immeasurable positive impact on countless Schodack students, families and employees. I know he will be missed by the many individuals who have had the pleasure to work with and know him over the last 13 years.

While it will be difficult to see Mr. Derby leave, please join me in congratulating him on this well-deserved next step. East Greenbush has selected a truly talented, dedicated and caring person for the job. I know he will provide outstanding leadership and support for Red Mill Elementary, just as he has in Schodack’s schools.

Looking ahead, we will soon begin the search for Castleton Elementary’s next Principal, giving us plenty of time to ensure a smooth transition process when Mr. Derby departs at the end of June. We will be seeking interested Schodack parents and employees to participate in stakeholder interviews with potential candidates. Please look for more information about this in the near future, and consider if you would like to volunteer for the search process.

Sincerely,

Jason M. Chevrier
Superintendent
Schodack Central School District
