NYSED Commissioner MaryEllen Elia Visits CES

NYS Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia visited Castleton Elementary School on May 15 to see how students are learning and to talk with educators about innovative ways they teach children.

The visit was Ms. Elia's second to Schodack CSD in two years, with this year's focus on grades K-2 and the school library.

In Laura Cook's kindergarten class, Commissioner Elia took the opportunity to read to students, encouraging them to pick a book. Their choice was "The Pout-Pout Fish". "Thank you. This was a highlight of my day, getting to read to you," Ms. Elia told students.

In first grade, Commissioner Elia watched students engaged in a hands-on science experiment where they measured liquids and timed the reaction of fizzing tablets. Teacher Jennifer Milo-Kosinski noted that the lesson was part of learning modules provided free to the district through SUNY Polytechnic Institute. "Thank you," Ms. Elia told students. "I love seeing all this science."

In second grade, teacher Kim Donato explained to Commissioner Elia how tablets were helping students improve their reading. Working in small groups, student teams competed to be the first to complete tasks. "You'll have to work together because you each don't have all the information you need," Mrs. Donato instructed students.

Commissioner Elia also visited the library where she talked to Library Media Specialist Stacey Rattner about the school's author visits and the collaborative projects teachers and the library provide students.
