MHHS students Stuart Allen and Philip Prinzo had their artwork accepted into this year’s Annual High School Art Invitational Exhibit, with Stuart earning a third place award for his self-portrait. The invitational involves more than a dozen area school districts and is presented by Questar III and WMHT. A reception was held April 18 at WMHT’s headquarters. Artwork by students Jennie Buckley and Franco Fettucia was also put on display at Questar III’s main offices in Schodack as part of the event. Congratulations! Maple Hill High School’s advanced level art students visited the Guggenheim Museum in New York City on April 27 at no cost to the district thanks to funding from the Schodack Police Department, Castleton Kiwanis and a Target Educational Field Trip Grant for the Arts. Students Learn First-Hand About Photovoltaics
Students in MHHS’s Principles of Engineering class got a first-hand lesson in photovoltaic technology April 26 by visiting the school’s roof. Students learned from representatives of Monolith Solar Associates how the solar panels on the school’s roof create electricity, even on a cloudy day. The visit is an example of how the district is integrating photovoltaics into curriculum to help get students interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. Posted 4/26/12.

MHHS Student Athletes Named to Academic All State Team
MHHS students Chelsea Mannion, Erin Mosher and Aubrey Racz were named to the Basketball Coaches Association of New York Academic All State Team for 2012. In order to qualify a player had to be a junior or senior on the varsity basketball team with a minimum scholastic average of 90 and must have been named as a 1st or 2nd team All Star. The Maple Hill Music Parents Association is offering a scholarship again this year. The scholarship is open to students currently in grades 6-11 who pursue music lessons, camps or programs this summer. The total scholarship money available is $1,000, split $500 to Middle School students and $500 to High School Students. The maximum award to any one student is $250. Student's Efforts Improve Softball Field
Thanks to the efforts of MHHS junior Sierra Pizzola, Schodack CSD held a ribbon cutting for its renovated softball field on Saturday, April 14. Sierra led efforts for much needed renovations at the field for her Girl Scouts Gold Award Project. By raising approximately $28,000 and working with dozens of volunteers, Sierra helped ensure the softball field had improvements such as new fences and infield. MHHS students far exceeded their $4,000 goal at the St. Baldrick's event on March 16, raising $23,876 to help find a cure for children's cancer. More than 60 students, teachers, staff members, community members, principals and school superintendent volunteered to have their heads shaved for the event. Congratulations to our students and teacher Kevin Hunter for organizing such a tremendous event and thank you to our community for your unbelievable support. As part of the district's ongoing efforts to fight bullying, School Psychologist Rebecca Blais and School Social Worker Jennifer Sober would like to share a tip sheet with parents that helps identify the signs of bullying and what to do if parents believe their student is the victim of bullying.
