Dear Castleton Elementary School families,

We want to let families know that the last two days of school (Tuesday, June 25 and Wednesday, June 26) will be half-days. Dismissal will be 11:15 to 11:30 a.m.

We apologize for the inconvenience this may cause but it is necessary due to a recent change in state Election Law that provides registered voters three hours of time off to vote. This creates a staffing challenge for schools and the best solution is to offer a half-day.

As Tuesday, June 25 is New York Primary Day, the district is making it a half-day of school. Wednesday, June 26 will also be a half-day to provide faculty the time in the afternoon to finish their end of the year work. Castleton Kids will operate on a typical half-day schedule for students who attend.

Again, we apologize for this inconvenience as we know half-days can be a childcare challenge for families. New York’s Legislature is considering an exemption for school districts due to the unique issues the Election Law amendment creates. We had hoped that exemption might be made in time for Primary Day but with no resolution at this time we think it is best to make June 25 and June 26 half-days. If the exemption is not made in time for Election Day on Nov. 5, we may need to make that day a half-day as well. We will keep our community informed of any changes.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Jason Chevrier
Superintendent
